History of Saudi Arabia
The first evidence of humans in the Arabian Peninsula dates back 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. During that time, band of hunters and gatherers roamed the land, living off wild animals and plants. As the European ice caps began to melt during the last ice age, around 15,000 years ago, the grasslands in the peninsula were destroyed and in their place stood giant deserts. But the grasslands weren't the only thing to disappear. Many wild animals began to fade away and rivers began to disappear, leaving dry riverbeds (wadis- arabic term) that can be seen today in some areas. This climate change forced humans to move into the mountain valleys and oases. No longer able to survive as hunter-gatherers, they had to develop other means of survival. As a result, agriculture developed starting in Mesopotamia and then in the Nile River Valley, and eventually spreading across the Middle East. The development of agriculture brought other advances. Pottery allowed farmers to store food. Animals, including goats, cattle, sheep, horses and camels, were domesticated, and people stopped hunting and began living in a world similar to societies. Because of that, settlements became more permanent, leading to the creation of civilizations; language, writing, political systems, art, and architecture.
Around the year 610, The Islamic prophet Muhammad, received a message from God (Allah- Arabic Name) through Angel Gabriel(Jibreel- Arabic Name). During his first three years of calling people to Islam, he was ordered to do it in quiet. If people had found out, they would have prosecuted the new believers and potentially the end of the religion as a whole. After those three years, he was ordered to begin spreading the message of Islam. During the time he was telling the world about Islam, he was prosecuted, oppressed, and boycotted. He and his believers faced very hard lives, many people had died and when it became too much, they were given a chance to go to Yathrib (Now known as Medina). This journey from Makkah to Medina was called the Hijrah, and it starts the Islamic calendar. Within the next few years, several battles took place between the followers of the Prophet Muhammad and the tribes in the surrounding areas that were trying to get rid of Muhammad's beliefs. The Muslims fought many wars against other tribes and as Islam progressed, they had wars with the Byzantine Empire and the last of the Persian Empire. Eventually many people entered Islam and they were able to re-enter Makkah peacefully.
